Are people loosing their Identity?
It was just another day in Ottawa, Canada. It was raining, and I was walking alone on the Ottawa River shore. Walking along the beautiful sculptures shown in the above picture, I saw John Felice Ceprano trying to balance a very big rock for a sculpture. I wanted to speak to him so from a little distance, I politely asked if I can help him with his work. John replied — I can manage, thank you! After balancing the big rock, he came to speak to me. While having a conversation, we learned about each other and exchanged many thoughts. And, one of those thoughts changed the way I viewed Mental Illness.
John mentioned, people come here to enjoy nature but they spend almost whole time looking at their phones and their kids destroy sculptures while they are busy with their phones. I felt John’s pain because I just saw him working hard in the rain to make those amazing pieces of art. My curiosity grew and I asked John, Why do you think this is?
People are loosing their Identity! — John replied.
If we think about it for a moment, John is right! Looking at today’s world It seems like people are loosing their identity. Almost everyone spends their time consuming useless content and living someone else’s experiences. One person is thinking about how his life would be if he were to be James Bond and other is thinking how I would look into that $10000 top Kim is wearing.
I tend to believe, the biggest contributor to this situation is social media. Research has shown that social media may cause depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. However; I never thought of how does it happen or what social media does to mind which leads to mental illness problems? John’s answer explained everything in one sentence.
So, folks, let’s get our sense of identity back and spend less time on our phones and more time with our loved ones. We need to teach our kids to live life to the fullest.
